Ostracism and the Collaborating Daughters

It is a real tragedy that Esti Weinstein felt that she had no choice but to take her own life. Several English sources wrote that Weinstein, “a 50 year old mother of seven was estranged from six of her children following her divorce and departure from the Gerrer (Gur) Hasidic community.”
However, the word “estranged” doesn’t begin to describe the reality of a mother who has been ostracized not only by her community, but by her own adult daughters.
Ostracism is a powerful and devastating weapon, and throughout history societies and their leaders have used it to put pressure on those who did not follow the rules. I feel that ostracism is actually a form of betrayal, since it treats the other as though he/she no longer exists
Outside the Haredi community, ostracism could be seen mainly among children in schools. Children who experienced it testify that it is far worse than physical abuse, since, with the latter, at least you know that you are being seen.
But actually it could also happen to anyone. I know the meaning of being ostracized since,  for the last 7 years, I have observed it from a close distance.  It often takes a trauma, such as death or divorce to break up a family. In the case of someone close to me, it was the death of his wife..
This topic is not discussed much in public, people are reluctant to acknowledge that their families are not perfect. Moreover, there is always the fear that if you admit being mistreated by your own family, it reflects badly on you. In a way, it is a variation on the silence of the victim.
Being ostracized doesn’t only affect the present -- not being part of your children and grandchildren's life, but it taints the memories of the past as well. The question "what did I ever do to deserve such a fate?" is always in the air. Parents who are being ostracized by their children find it painful to look at old photos or to see happy families and other people's grandchildren.
This cruel punishment could ruin the future as well. In her letter Esti Weinstein wrote that she had hoped that her estrangement from her daughters was temporary and that with time they would come around. It means that for the last years she spent every day of her life waiting and hoping for her daughters to change their mind. That miracle did not happen, and when she finally realized that nothing was going to change she could not face the pain awaiting for her in the future.
Esti Weinstein chose to kill herself, and she wrote in her last note: "in this town I gave birth to my daughters, and in this town I die because of my daughters."  Most ostracized or estranged parents do not resort to such extreme measures. However it doesn’t mean that they don't suffer. Some learn to live with the pain, others become so desperate that they give up on their new life, and their chance for happiness, in the hope of regaining the approval of their adult children. Just the other day, I heard about a man in a support group for widows and widowers, who ended a happy relationship with a fellow widow because his children threatened to ostracize him. This is how powerful this weapon is.
The fifth commandment: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you,” is the first, among the 10, that addresses inter-personal relationships, specifically the relationship between children and their parents.
This important commandment doesn't require that adult children approve of their parents’ life choices but that they honor them. Esti Weinstein sanctimonious daughters failed their test in basic Bible comprehension. It is their fault that their mother is dead.
Let it be warning to all adult children who are callous and disrespectful to their parents.

For Father’s Day: The Father As A Teacher

Growing up in Israel in the late 1950s I hardly have any childhood memories of my father. He was always away at work. My mother and my older brother were in charge of my upbringing. I got to know my father only as an adult. Children books and magazines, from that time, tell a similar story to mine. The father was always absent, either physically at work, or emotionally. Pictures of the father show him quite withdrawn, sitting behind a newspaper which separates him from the rest of his family.
It seems that fathers in the 1950s were spoilt by their family, which demanded nothing of them but gave them a lot of respect. But already in the 1980s things were different, my husband was an involved father, as the following Father’s Day story indicates.
It all started with a project: a dollhouse made out of wooden bookcase, which my daughters built together with their father. They had labored on it for weeks, and then when the dollhouse was finally done it was time to furnish it.
My husband asked the girls to make a list of the essential items they needed in order to furnish the different rooms of the house. Their wish list was very long: there were so many things that they just couldn't do without.
Then he said: “This is an excellent list, and we will be happy to split the cost of the furniture that you have chosen.” He announced it as though he was handing out a big  award, which in a way he was. It was just that they were caught off guard, our daughters were certain that we would be paying for everything.
I was as surprised as the girls: my husband had not revealed his plan, he was probably worried that I would object. Indeed, although I said nothing and went along, I secretly felt that at the age of 7 and 8 they were too young to have their wings clipped in such a way. They were thrilled about the finished dollhouse and were looking forward to the endless possibilities of interior design.
It is not that he wasn't willing to spend the money, quite the contrary, like the rest of us he was anxious to see the dollhouse come to life. In retrospect I understand that this was a brilliant fiscal move. He seized an opportune  moment to teach our daughters the meaning of money -- value, making choices, taking responsibility, accountability and even patience.
The girls were not even resentful, as rational creatures they just went ahead, made the calculation of how much money they were willing to spend, and came up with a much shorter list of the most important items.
As a business professor, and a father, he wanted to demonstrate to his daughters the concept of an  "interested party." In our case it meant that if they wanted something, they had to take action. It was also an enabling lesson, the girls saved money to buy new furniture, and made some decorations themselves. The dollhouse became more meaningful and valuable because we, the parents, refrained from buying all the furniture for them at once.
My husband believed that children should learn early about money so that they could grow up to be responsible adults. But he was able to teach them such a lesson only because he was close to his daughters, and worked together with them. It is true that my own father had a much easier life at home, but I feel that since he was absent, he missed out a lot.
Happy Father's Day!

For Positive Communication: Netiquette Revisited

On the eve of the new millennium I read with my students a detailed article about the disadvantages of office email. At that time it was quite a new tool and was sometimes misused. The writer of the article argued that although office email was a boon to the work place, it had to be handed carefully as it was the cause for so many unnecessary misunderstandings.
As a member of several mailing lists, and Facebook and WhattsApp groups, I am always surprised how often misunderstandings become conflicts. Furthermore, the same people who are, in real life, civilized members of the community become volatile in their communication on the net.
Although electronic communication has been with us for quite a while, it is surprising to find out that not many people practice netiquette: the rules of etiquette that apply when communicating over computer networks, especially the Internet.
The virtual mentor Michael Hyatt compiled a clear and simple list of to-do and not-to-do rules for electronic communication. Most of those rules are well known. However, a quick refresher etiquette review could prove helpful.
Here is my rendition to Hyatt's Email Etiquette 101
-- Keep messages brief and exactstate your most important point first and clarify the purpose of your message.
-- A brief mail, to limited number of recipients, increases your chance of getting a response
-- Limit your mail to a single message; if you need to discuss another matter write another mail
-- Write the topic of the mail clearly in the subject line
-- Do not respond right away. While instant message requires an instant response, it is quite enough to respond to an email within a  day.
-- Since  email doesn't allow the benefit of non-verbal cues, like a smile, or a kind look, your words become your tone, so choose them carefully. Do not use sarcasm and avoid jokes.  If, without meaning to, you offended someone apologize right away.
-- While email is a great tool for positive responses and encouragement, it is a poor choice for criticism. For that face to face interaction works best.
-- Don’t reply in anger. Wait a day or two and then check your mail and carefully consider what to do next.
-- Don’t send mails containing offensive remarks or derogatory adjectives, use proper language which could be quoted.
-- Avoid reply-all unless it is necessary and don’t use all CAPS and excessive punctuation in order to make a point. In the digital world they are the equivalent to shouting.
-- Check your spelling, especially if you are using automatic spelling, and reread your mail before you push the send button.
It has been almost twenty years since my students and I read the email article, and it seems that not much has changed. We use email for most of our needs but still senders and recipients have not learnt to take the time to examine the text carefully, and as a result misunderstandings happen all the time.
It's not always possible to remember to take the time and read or write carefully. It happened to me that, in a rush, while writing in Hebrew on my smartphone, I replaced Ayin for Youd, and referred to my female friend as "Barren" Rachel  instead of "Dear." Rachel. But, in normal times, whenever possible, applying netiquette could make personal communication over the internet a much more positive experience.

"People of the Book" Did Not Make The Top 10 List Of Literate Nations

Saturday is the eve of Shavuot, the holiday when we celebrate Matan Torah, the giving of the Torah to the Jewish People at Mt. Sinai. This gift has turned us into People of the Book, and as throughout the centuries Jewish identity was connected with the Torah, we have come to regard ourselves as a literate nation.
However, this is no longer the case, in a recent list of the world’s ten most literate nations, in the Guardian Finland ranked first, and Israel did not make the top ten at all. John Miller, who conducted the study, believes that Finland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden achieved the top marks because their culture values reading.
That research did not look only at literacy achievement tests, but it closely examined  “literate behavior characteristics,” which means parameters like numbers of academic, public and school libraries, and the numbers of books in libraries, and statistics on years of schooling, computer penetration and newspapers.
When basic reading assessment were the only factors considered, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China came on top. However when adding in the factors of literate behaviors, none of those countries made even the top 25 list.
This study proves what many of us feel intuitively, that reading matters. It concludes that “literate behaviors are critical to the success of individuals and nations in the knowledge-based economics that define our global future”.
The United Kingdom reached  the 19th place. Diana Gerald, the chief executive of UK reading charity BookTrust, expressed her disappointment from the low ranking:  “We come from the nation of Dickens and Shakespeare, we have an extraordinary literary background.” “I believe we are doing lots of good work on core literacy and phonics, which are vital, but we need to add … getting children from a young age into loving reading, and wanting to read ."
Similarly, we are the people of the book and have an extraordinary literary tradition. We also do lots of good work on teaching our children to read. So what happened to us, why did we cease to be a literate nation?
There must be many important reasons to that decline, but I would like to focus on the most obvious one. For the last 10 years, in Israel the ministry of Education and Culture has been divided into two. How is it possible to separate between education and culture?
It isn’t, this was a cynical political move, which reveals that for the last ten years our governments have not been taking education and culture seriously. Moreover, our leaders fail to see the crucial role education and culture have in devising  the future of our nation.  Obviously this separation has not made the whole greater than the sum of its parts, and it is not surprising that although Israel is number 2 in its educational investment (after Brazil) this investment does not make us a literate nation.
Traditionally on Shavuot many Jewish people stay up all night reading and studying a variety of sacred texts. This custom Tikkun Leil Shavuot, goes beyond reciting the Torah, toward a more philosophical and humanistic reading of the different texts
I read that the custom of Tikkun originated with the mystics of Safed in the 16th century.
